Motorcyclist Killed in Wrong-Way Collision on 405 Fwy in Torrance

A motorcyclist is dead after a suspected DUI driver, in a white pickup truck, drove into oncoming traffic on the 405 Freeway colliding head-on with a motorcycle in Torrance early Sunday morning, Feb. 4th. The incident occurred shortly before 3:00 a.m. when California Highway Patrol and Torrance Fire Department responded to reports of a wrong-way collision that occurred in the southbound lanes between the exits of Artesia and Crenshaw Boulevards on the San Diego 405 Freeway.

CHP Sgt. Ray Scheidnes said that a white 1987 Dodge pickup, driven by a 22-year old male of San Diego, was traveling northbound in the southbound lanes on the 405 Freeway. The driver collided head on with a 2006 Harley-Davidson driven by a 57-year old male resident of Hawthorne. The motorcyclist was ejected from his motorcycle and was found by first responders on the roadway. He was pronounced dead at the scene. “The pickup truck did end up against the sound wall facing the wrong way with its left side up against the wall, facing northbound in the southbound lane, pinning the driver inside the vehicle,” Sgt. Scheidnes said.

Firefighters used the Jaws of Life to extract the driver. He was transported to Harbor-UCLA Medical Center where he was treated for major injuries sustained in the collision. Upon his release from Harbor-UCLA Medical Center he was subsequently arrested under suspicions of driving under the influence. “Alcohol is being investigated as a contributing factor in this collision,” the Highway Patrol said in a statement. The names of the deceased victim and the DUI suspect were not immediately released.
