Gardena, CA – Police Officer Dies following a Motorcycle Collision

Gardena, CA (November 15, 2018) – A Gardena police officer died one day after being hit by a car while riding his police motorcycle to work. The officer was identified as Toshio Hirai according to a Gardena Police department spokesperson. Officer Hirai was injured on Wednesday morning and was taken to the hospital in critical conditions. His death was announced Nov 15, 2018 Thursday night by the department.
The accident happened in Los Angeles near 238th Street & Western Avenue at around 7:30 A.M. The driver of the vehicle was a 17-year old girl who stopped and cooperated with authorities at the scene. She was licensed and no sign of alcohol or drugs were detected. No arrest was made. Officer Hirai grew up in Gardena and started working for the department in 2006. He spoke five languages and served on the SWAT team and also worked traffic investigation. He loved life and worked hard to serve his community. Officer Hirai left behind a wife and a 2-year old son. The Gardena officer’s Union has set up a GoFundMe to assist the Hirai family. Checks can also be made payable to the Gardena Police department.
