Motorcyclist Killed in San Leandro

June 8th ─ A motorcyclist was killed after a collision between 2 vans on Interstate (I-) 880 Tuesday afternoon near San Leandro. The Alameda County Coroner’s Bureau has identified the motorcyclist as 33-year old Matthew Newman, of San Ramon, located about 34 miles east of San Francisco. The incident occurred around 4:00 p.m. Tuesday on northbound I-880 just south of Davis Street. According to authorities, Newman was lane splitting close to the center divider during rush hour traffic. Newman’s motorcycle had hit the passenger side of a 2005 Ford Econoline E350 van and then hit the drive’s side of a 2010 Volkswagen Routan minivan resulting in Newman being ejected onto the interstate. Authorities arrived at the scene to find a wrecked motorcycle and Newman’s body face down blocking two left-hand lanes.

Newman was pronounced dead at the scene. Officer Joseph Fowler of the CHP stated that investigators are trying to determine what caused Newman to collide with both vans. The accident caused a temporary closure of 2 lanes on the I-880 so an investigation could be conducted as to the cause of the accident. The CHP issued a sig alert, and started diverting cars off I-880 near Davis Street. The backup of cars stretched to Highway 92 in Hayward nearly 7 miles away. All lanes reopened about 2 hours later just before 6:15 p.m. It is still undetermined whether Newman was impaired, and the CHP is not releasing any information to the public until next of kin is contacted.
