Andrew Jelmert Identified as Bicyclist Killed in Griffith Park Hit-and-run Crash

LOS ANGELES, CA (April 20, 2022) – Andrew Jelmert was identified by authorities as the bicyclist who was struck and killed on Saturday in Los Angeles’ Griffith Park. Jelmert was riding on Crystal Springs Drive on Saturday, April 16, when a driver hit him.

The time was roughly 3:45 p.m., Los Angeles Police said.

The suspect driver left the vehicle–described as a BMW–and fled the crash site on foot.

Responders found Jelmert had died at the crash site. He was 77 years old.

Reports say he was an avid cyclist.

People who witnessed the incident helped authorities locate the suspect, and police arrested him.

Jairo Martinez was booked on suspicion of vehicular manslaughter. Authorities suspect alcohol was a contributing circumstance in the crash.

Investigators are continuing their work.
