HESPERIA, CA (December 2, 2021) – An abandoned motorcycle on Highway 395 led to two big rigs crashing in Hesperia, which killed 14 cattle and injured a driver. The Tuesday, November 30 crash occurred close to Poplar Street roughly around midnight.
Authorities said one of the big rigs–described as an International semi–had been heading southbound when it struck a motorcycle that was abandoned on the roadway. The impact sent the semi into the lanes on the northbound side of the road.
The International semi collided head on with another semi, described as a 2022 Kenworth.
Responders from the San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Department and firefighters arrived on scene to help. The force of the crash had sent the Kenworth to overturn.
The driver of the Kenworth was trapped in the vehicle, and 32 cattle were trapped that were being transported. Reports say seven of the cattle were killed in the crash.
According to the San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Department, seven other animals had to be euthanized at the crash site due to their severe injuries.
Responders worked to free the person who had been driving the Kenworth truck.
The person suffered injuries that were described as moderate. The types of injuries the person suffered, and current condition, are not known.
The driver’s identity–including name, age, gender, and city of residence–has not yet been reported.
Reports say local ranchers helped to rescue eight animals from the wreckage. Another ten animals left the crash site and walked into the desert. They were located and gathered.
The other driver was not injured in the crash, according to reports.
Investigators are collecting information and details about the crash; they are searching for the motorcyclist who abandoned the motorcycle on the highway’s lanes.
If anyone has information about the incident, the person can call Deputy Rogoff, who is with the Hesperia station of the San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Department.
The number is 760-947-1500.
