August 14th ─ the search continues as Los Angeles Police Department South Traffic Division seeks the driver involved in a fatal hit-and-run collision that killed a cyclist, who was trying to stop that driver from fleeing the scene after another cyclist was struck in Long Beach early Monday morning. The incident occurred just after 1:30 a.m. when authorities received calls of collision between 2 cyclists and a black Chevy Tahoe.

The two cyclists, both men, were traveling near Long Beach Boulevard and the 710 Freeway on-ramp around 1 a.m. According to an eyewitness, he saw one of the cyclists walking his bike across the intersection when that black Chevy Tahoe accelerated to avoid a red light. The driver of the Chevy Tahoe sped off, but the other cyclist, who was not hit, jumped on top of the hood of the vehicle to try and get the driver to stop. The cyclist rode on the hood for a half-mile before falling off. Officers arrived to find an injured man in his 30s who was unconscious. He was pronounced dead at the scene a short time later. Another witness stated that the driver returned to the scene, stopped to look at the victims, and then ditched the car in the middle of the road near Long Beach Boulevard and Adams Street. He fled from the scene on foot, authorities said.

Police were questioning witnesses found near the crash scene, hoping to discover further information about the fatal incident. According to another witness, he saw one of the cyclists walking his bike across the intersection before the Chevy Tahoe sped up to avoid a red light. After clearing the light, he said the driver hit one of the cyclists, and did not stop or slow down after the crash. The cyclist was not in a crosswalk when he was hit. Members of the surrounding community said jaywalking at the location is a common problem because the nearest crosswalk adds several minutes to cross. Los Angeles Police said they know who the suspect is but do not have him in custody yet.
