ONTARIO, CA (July 30, 2019) – A man has been arrested after authorities accuse the man of driving drunk after he struck and killed a bicyclist, and then fled the scene, in Ontario early Wednesday morning, July 31st. Ontario Police Department has released the suspect’s identity as 31-year old Julio Tapia of Ontario. Tapia was driving westbound on Mission Boulevard around 1:10 A.M. when he struck and killed a man who was riding his bicycle bear the intersection of Mission Boulevard and Baker Avenue.
Tapia fled the scene and first responders arrived at the intersection and pronounced the bicyclist dead at the scene. Tapia was found a little over an hour later when dispatchers received a report of a “suspicious occupied vehicle” parked in a parking lot along Baker Avenue. Officers found Tapia inside the vehicle bleeding from his head and face with major front end damage that officers say is consistent with evidence found at hit-and-run scenes. Officers also determined that Tapia was under the influence from open alcohol containers found inside the vehicle. Tapia was subsequently arrested and booked on suspicion of drunk-driving, felony hit-and-run and vehicular manslaughter. Bail for Tapia was set at $250,000 pending his initial court appearance, scheduled Friday in San Bernardino County Superior Court, records show.
