Jonathan Petty Detained in Fatal DUI Bike Crash That Kille Peter Binz

Clovis, CA (June 2nd, 2023) – In a heart-wrenching incident, a hit-and-run crash involving a suspected drunk driver took the life of a bicyclist on Wednesday night May 31st. The victim, identified as 33-year-old Peter Binz of Clovis, was riding his bicycle westbound along Herndon Avenue, just east of Clovis, shortly before 7:00 p.m.

According to investigators, Jonathan Petty, who was driving in the same direction, was under the influence when he collided with Binz, just west of Langley Avenue. California Highway Patrol Officer Mike Salas explained, “Due to that driver’s impairment, he failed to negotiate a straight path and veered right into the back of that poor innocent bicyclist.”

The impact of the crash threw Peter Binz from his bicycle, causing fatal injuries. The authorities tragically pronounced him dead at the scene. The California Highway Patrol reported that Petty fled from the crash site without rendering aid or calling emergency services. Instead, he drove straight to his residence, which was a short distance away.

Jonathan Petty’s Cowardly Actions Received Condemnation From Clovis Officers On The Scene

Petty’s actions drew condemnation from Officer Salas. The Officer stated, “The driver, after hitting this bicyclist, decided not to call 911.  He did not to stop and get out and render aid, but rather he chose to drive away from the scene.  He went straight to his house, which was a short distance away.”

Thanks to the quick thinking of a family member at Petty’s home, they called 911 to report the crash.  They disclosed Petty’s whereabouts, and authorities were able to locate him. Law enforcement officials took Petty into custody at the residence.  It was approximately a mile and a half from the location where Binz lost his life.

Jonathan Petty Faces Charges of DUI and Felony Hit and Run

Authorities have revealed that Petty now faces charges of driving under the influence (DUI) and felony hit-and-run. Court records indicate that Petty has a prior DUI conviction from August 2022, where he pleaded no contest to driving under the influence.  He had a blood alcohol level of .08% or more. As a result, the court placed him on three years of probation and ordered him to attend an alcohol program.

Officer Salas expressed his dismay, noting, “This individual knew what he was doing, had a prior DUI arrest and, again, just poor choices which lead to an unfortunate fatality.”

Turns Out Jonathan Petty Has a Recent History of Bad Driving

In an additional twist, a family friend established a GoFundMe page revealing that Petty was involved in another crash near Pine Flat Lake on New Year’s Eve in 2022, where his pickup truck plummeted off a cliff. However, the California Highway Patrol confirmed that they did not suspect DUI as a factor in that incident.

In response to the deadly crash and arrest, the family of Jonathan Petty issued a statement expressing their devastation and extending condolences to the victim’s family. They emphasized their hope that their son takes full responsibility for his actions and works towards making amends for the harm he caused. They also urged compassion and understanding during this challenging time. Petty is currently being held on bail set at $82,000 as the investigation and legal proceedings continue.
